Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’re here to help.

What is a charter school? Are charter schools accredited?

A charter school is a public school that families can choose instead of their assigned neighborhood school. In South Carolina, charter schools are tuition-free, non-religious, and open to all students. They follow state education standards but have more flexibility in how they teach, allowing for more personalized and innovative learning.

Charter schools are accredited through the South Carolina Department of Education. Legacy Traditional Schools is in good standing with its authorizer and is also fully accredited by Cognia, a nationally recognized nonprofit that accredits K–12 schools based on rigorous standards for teaching, learning, and continuous improvement.

How much is tuition?

Always zero! Legacy Traditional School is tuition-free, just like any other public school. As a public charter school in South Carolina, we are not allowed to charge tuition. Families never pay to enroll, and there are no application fees or deposits. Some clubs or extracurricular activities may have optional fees, but attending our school is always free.

Is Legacy Traditional School a public school? Does it follow state standards?

Yes, Legacy Traditional School is a public charter school. That means it is tuition-free, open to all students, and follows the same academic expectations as other public schools in South Carolina. While we have flexibility in how we teach, our curriculum aligns with the South Carolina State Standards. Students at Legacy also take the same required state tests as other public-school students. Families can expect a high-quality education with a learning environment focused on helping students thrive.

Who can enroll, and how does enrollment work?

Legacy Traditional School is open to all South Carolina families. There are no attendance boundaries, and you do not have to live in a specific neighborhood or district to apply. Families provide their own transportation, and there are no entrance exams or auditions required.

Our enrollment application opened on October 1, 2025. If more students apply than there are seats available, we will hold a random lottery on December 10, as required by state law. Seats are offered based on availability, and all students have an equal opportunity to attend.

What is the placement criteria for enrollment priority?

When more applications are received than seats available, Legacy Traditional School follows a state-approved process to ensure fair and transparent enrollment. After the December 10 lottery, remaining seats are filled based on availability and enrollment priority.

As permitted under S.C. Code § 59-40-50(8), Legacy Traditional Schools – South Carolina will give enrollment preference in the
following order:

  • Siblings of currently enrolled students or students who attended the school within the last six years for at least one full academic year.
  • Children of employees of LTS-SC and members of the charter committee, provided that this group does not exceed 20% of total school enrollment.
  • Dependents of active-duty military members residing or stationed in South Carolina
How will families be notified about lottery results or offers?

Families will receive email notifications with:

  • The student’s lottery result
  • Instructions for accepting an offer
  • Registration steps and document requirements

Families are given at least one week to respond. Seats are secured only after all required documents are submitted and verified.

Can families appeal an enrollment or lottery decision?

Yes. Families may submit a written appeal to the Legacy Traditional Schools – South Carolina Governing Board.

The appeal must:

  • Be submitted within 7 days of the denial
  • State clear reasons for the request

Families will receive:

  • Acknowledgment of the appeal within 7 days
  • A final decision within 14 days of submission (a hearing may be held at the Board’s discretion)

The Board’s decision is final.

How are homeless students supported during enrollment?

Students experiencing homelessness are enrolled immediately, even if documentation is missing, following the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. For more information about McKinney-Vento, please visit our Compliance page.

Do you serve students with disabilities and English learners?

Yes. Legacy Traditional Schools serves students with disabilities and English learners. We provide Exceptional Student Services for students with IEPs or 504 plans and English Learner support. As a public charter school, we follow all federal and South Carolina requirements, including Child Find and FAPE.

Do you offer meals?

Our schools participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which provides free or reduced-price meals to eligible families based on household income. All meals meet USDA nutrition standards, including guidelines for calories, key nutrients, and limits on fat, sodium, and added sugar. Families will complete a simple meal application to determine eligibility. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

Do you offer transportation?

We do not offer bus transportation. Families will need to plan for daily drop-off and pick-up. Details about our driveline procedures and release times will be shared as we get closer to the first day of school.
